Lesson Using Images

For my lesson using images, I took pictures of different body parts. My lesson would be for a Kindergarten class and it would be about all the different body parts. I took pictures of a hand, foot, ear, eye, and teeth. For this lesson you could inculde countless pictures. I also feel that for this lesson it is very important to include multicultural pictures of body parts. I would have the class match up the pictures to the correct word. I would also have students explain how they use that body part and how it can be important. For an art activity I would have the students cut out pre-made body parts and paste them on to an outline of a body. I feel that these activities will allow children to explore different body parts and learn about the human body as a whole.

Sam,
I think it is a great idea to discuss body parts and what they are because children need to be aware of them. Although I do think that by the time children get to kindergarten most if not all know these already so I think it might be more important to focus on the matching of pictures and words. I think it is great and very important to include multicultural pictures of body parts so that you get the anti-bias within your lesson. I think it is also important that children know how to use each body part, what it is for and why each part is important. I think the hands-on activity with cutting and pasting and acknowledging different body parts and where they go is important. To make this part of the lesson more challenging you could always say for example: this part of the body helps you pick up things. There is a total of 10 of these and each arm is attached to 5 of these. And the answer would obviously be fingers. That would obviously have to be worded better before asking to the students but that way they would be more challenged and have to figure out what part you are talking about, find the part out of the cut out pieces and place the part where it belongs on the body. You’re idea is great and a lot of fun. One other thing that I thought would be really interesting is to take pictures of the student’s body parts, and each student would be a certain thing (eye, ear, hair, nose, mouth, arm, leg etc.) And they will feel more special because they are literally apart of the lesson and in the picture. If you have a child in a wheelchair you could even take a picture of the wheelchair itself because people with disabilities that use wheelchairs feel as if the chair is a part of their body because they practically live in them and it is a way for them to get around. You could go off of this and start another lesson on different things that others use (wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids etc). I love your idea and I think it would be a lot of fun and children would really like it and have fun with it. Great idea!

I really like how you mentioned you were going to include multicultural body parts. That is something I never would have thought about, but that is so important to make children feel included and like they are supposed to be there! I like how you have also thought about other activities you can incorporate with your lesson. Another idea that you can incorporate into this lesson is the sing the head, shoulder, knees, and toes song. It would be a great way to add in music and children always love singing songs!

Sam,
You have some wonderful ideas within that lesson plan. My favorite part about it was when you talked about having multicultural body part pictures. This is a great idea because many children may not understand that everyone looks different and has different skin color and I think that would be a great way to introduce people from different cultures. Also, to extend your lesson, you could read children’s books about people from different cultures or people who may look slightly different from a majority of the children within your classroom. Furthermore, you may want to extend your lesson plan to meet the needs to individuals with disabilities. Not everyone's legs, arms, hands, and so on look the same. Some people may have a missing finger, or missing limb of some sort. This could be another way to extend the lesson plan because it would introduce the children to individuals with disabilities. Overall, you did a wonderful job and had great ideas!

I like your lesson very much because it is important for the children to know the different body parts. My only question would be whether it is developmentally appropriate for a kindergarten classroom, however, I'm sure a majority of the students would do well. Do you have any ideas for how you would adapt the lesson for those who maybe were not as advanced as some of the classmates or those children who did not have the ability to cut and paste the body parts? Just curious! The lesson is great though and would be informative for the children as a whole!

I think that talking about body parts is a great idea! Kids need to know all about their bodies and other bodies. Also, I think adding multicultural pictures as body parts is a great addition to the lesson. It is important to acknowledge the different parts of the body and the cut and paste activity is perfect for that. I feel like this is a very informative lesson and appropriate as well!

Sam,
I think you choose an excellant theme for you lesson. You can elaborate in so many different ways on this topic. I think that it is important for children to learn about the basic body parts since they will most likely be learning more in depth about this in the future. I think that children should also be familiar with the functions of each body part! Incorporating multicultural picture of body parts is a great idea! This way children can learn and become familiar with the different cultures in our world. I think this topic can also be directed to many different subjects in school such as math, history, etc. I think you did a great job with this blog post! Keep up the good work!
